Tanzanian Luitfried Mbunda will address international and human rights

Dana College is proud to offer a special lecture on international and human rights by Dr. Luitfied Mbunda, Fulbright Scholar, at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 10 in Trinity Chapel.

Mbunda is senior lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. He is visiting Nebraska as part of the Fulbright Visiting Specialist Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, and administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. The program is designed to promote understanding of the Muslim World and civilization by providing opportunities for U.S. higher educational institutions to host specialists from the Muslim World for short-term programs of intensive lecturing and public outreach.

In addition to his duties as a professor, Mbunda serves as an advocate of the High Court of Tanzania. He has participated in several international conferences on human rights, African development, law, globalization and refugees. His published works, include “The Support Structure Theory and Its Implication in Securing Basic Rights in Tanzania,” in Taking Stock of Human Rights Situation in Africa; “Does the Law in Tanzania Protect Street Children? An appraisal of the Legal Regime Governing Street Children,” in Poverty, AIDS and Street Children in East Africa; and “The Bill of Rights. Strategies and Protection and Promotion of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms in Multi-Party Tanzania,” in Constitutional Reforms and Democratic Governance in Tanzania, as well as others. His dissertation, “Freedom of Speech and Association. A Study of Rights and Constitutional Development in Tanzania” was published by Howell Publications of Michigan in 1999.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Mbundo present to our campus and community,” said Carrie Reed, director of college relations and marketing. “Part of our mission as a college is to provide our students and community with the opportunities to expand their knowledge of the greater world. Dr. Mbundo’s willingness to share his vast experience with international human rights and law is an opportunity no one should pass up.”

The lecture is free and the public is warmly invited to attend.
