Bob Schmoll, executive vice president and chief
financial officer, said Dana chose to work once again with
architectural firm RDG and contractors Weitz. The two firms
were also contracted to build Dana’s Gardner-Hawks Center,
a $6 million state-of-the-art athletic facility completed in
2003, and the Margre Henningson Durham Center, the college’s
main classroom facility completed in 1993.
Together the firms and Dana have created a plan for a building
that will add an aesthetic quality to the campus, as well as
additional housing. The two halves of the building will mirror
each other at an angle, with a pitched roof, gables, brick
accents and a diamond pattern adding to the visual pull of
the construction.
“We didn’t want to build a ‘residence hall
box,’” Schmoll said. “We want to build something
that fits in with our campus, which is often recognized for
its beauty.”
Site work began in September. The construction of the building,
as well as a new parking lot, is expected to take nine to 10
months. The college fully expects that the building will be
open for new residents starting with the Fall 2006 term.
To take advantage of tradeworkers already on campus, Dana
will also use this academic year to renovate Holling Hall,
a residence hall originally constructed in 1964. The renovation
will update the climate control in the building, giving each
room individual control of temperature. Aesthetic work will
also be done to update the look of the hall.
The two construction projects, combined with a campus-wide
purchase of new residence hall furniture made this summer,
will vastly update Dana’s residence hall offerings. As
a residential college, administrators said they are committed
to providing students with a home-away-from-home environment
that matches increased expectations.
