DANA RUNNERS PICK UP RAKES FOR WORK-A-THON
Track and cross country
teams do yard work
for community service and fundraiser
Dana College’s cross
country and track
teams donated their Fall Break day-off from classes to help others
deal with fall yard work. In the teams’ first Work-A-Thon,
held Oct. 17 in Blair, the student athletes raked leaves and cleaned
up yards for those who needed help.
The primary goal of the Work-A-Thon was to be a community
service event. All work was done free of charge by members of the
teams. Pledges were accepted, but not required.
“Head Cross Country Coach Bob Spangler and I
both felt that it was time for both the teams to get out and perform
a meaningful service to the community,” said Allan Friesen,
head track coach. “This was a chance for the team to get out
and interact with the community.”
Dana prides itself on being a college where students
can be as active in campus and service organizations as they choose.
The Work-A-Thon is one of many examples of Dana students choosing
to take charge with the support of mentors in the faculty and coaches.
“At Dana we prize service above self as a desirable
feature of character and leadership development,” said Dr.
Myrvin Christopherson, president. “No one escapes involvement
at Dana. Hence, when they graduate, Dana alumni tend to assume leadership
roles in their schools, churches, businesses, communities and volunteer
groups wherever they locate.”
All of the pledges generated through the Work-A-Thon
will be used to buy equipment, uniforms, shoes and other supplies
for the teams. People interested in pledging to the Work-A-Thon
should contact Friesen at 426-7392, or sent a donation to: Dana
College Track and Cross Country Work-A-Thon, 2848 College Drive,
Box 1192, Blair, NE 68008.
