Freshman trackster Eric Bane educates the public during the Homeless Challenge

DANA WINS FIRST HOMELESS CHALLENGE

Friendly competition with Midland Lutheran nets $3,000 for charity

Thanks to volunteers from Dana’s track and football teams and the generosity of our local community several families will be able to stay in their homes this winter. The first Dana College vs. Midland Lutheran Homeless Challenge raised $3,000 in one day for local homeless.

The challenge was held Saturday, November 20 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dana students collected donations on the intersections of Highways 30 and 75 in Blair. Dana College raised more than $2,300 for Goldenrod Hills Community Action. Midland raised more than $700 for Care Corps.

Organizer Michella Friesen wanted the fundraiser to be educational as well. She gave the students signs to hold with facts on homelessness like, “Nationally, children make up approximately 39 percent of the homeless.”

Goldenrod Hills helps those in our local community who are not yet homeless but facing that reality. The agency’s programs include advice and support to help families pay their rent and heating bills. Care Corps in Fremont is a homeless shelter that provides meals and housing to those who are currently living without a home.

Students who volunteered said they were glad to help raise money for such a worthy cause.

“Especially at this time of year, we are reminded of those less fortunate than us,” said one volunteer.
