December 12, 2006

Over the years, limited discussions have occurred between Dana and Midland as we explore ways to work together and better serve our students and the mission of Lutheran higher education in Nebraska. In September of this year, at the direction of the presidents and with the blessing of the boards, the academic deans of both colleges began meeting on a regular basis to identify academic areas of synergy, programs where one of us has a strength or resource that is needed at the other institution. They are also identifying issues that must be addressed before effective collaboration can take place, such as calendars and class schedules. No decisions have been made, and their progress has been slowed by the recent events at Midland.

Over the years there have been limited cooperative endeavors on the administrative side. Much more can be explored, such as joint purchasing of consumable supplies, services, and lease/contract agreements.

Students enroll at Dana and Midland because they are assured of a quality education and the ability to participate in music, theater, athletics and other activities that will enrich their lives and prepare them to be leaders in their careers and in our communities and churches. Board members and donors alike agreed that the culture of each institution is key to the educational experience. No one is suggesting anything more than finding organizational efficiencies in order that we might maintain the essence and uniqueness of each campus.

At this time of change and challenge for both institutions, the Dana College Board of Regents and President Janet Philipp stand ready to join with Midland Lutheran College to find even more ways that we can better serve students while strengthening our institutions. Last week, in the midst of the events at Midland, both Dana board chair, Dennis Gethmann, and Dana president Dr. Janet Philipp, communicated that desire to their respective counterparts at Midland.

We are aware of the press this issue has received in the past couple of days. This does not change our intent of the past several months to further discussions and explorations which will assist both of us in our mission of Lutheran higher education in Nebraska.
