DANA COLLEGE TO ADD WOMEN'S GOLF

New sport is another opportunity at active college

Dana College is proud to announce that it will add women’s golf to its intercollegiate athletic offerings, starting with the fall of 2004. Women’s golf will join Dana’s existing 13 intercollegiate athletic teams.

“Golf is a growing sport in the United States,” said Jim Krueger, athletic director. “We think it’s good for a small, private school like Dana to be able to offer this popular sport to our students.”

Dana’s small student body is extremely active. Seventy percent of Dana’s nearly 600 students participate in intercollegiate athletics. More than 98 percent of Dana students are involved in at least one extra-curricular activity.

The administration at Dana thought adding a lifetime sport like golf would help contribute to Dana students’ commitment to physical health. Golf is a sport more likely to be pursued by students after they graduate than large-team sports and is an excellent way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“Lots of students come here to participate,” Krueger said. “Women’s golf gives them another opportunity to do so.”

The search is currently underway for a head coach, but Krueger said the college is hoping to attract several high school seniors to start the program out well in the first year. They will have plenty of competition. The Great Plains Athletic Conference, to which Dana belongs, already has 10 schools with women’s golf.

Dana College is a place where students make things happen — in their own lives and in the lives of others.
