NEW FACES JOIN FULL-TIME FACULTY
Dana welcomed seven new full-time members of the faculty at the
start of the academic year. Some are homegrown and some bring experience
from places far away.
Dr. Stewart Brewer,
assistant professor of history, earned his bachelor’s in history
and master’s in anthropology from Brigham Young University.
He earned his doctorate in international history from University
at Albany, State University of New York. He previously served as
a visiting assistant professor in the department of history at Rhodes
College in Memphis, Tenn. Brewer is an expert in Latin American
studies and is currently working on a book on the history of U.S.-Latin
American relations.
Dr. Kate Joeckel,
associate professor of communication, received her doctorate in
speech and dramatic art as well as her master’s and bachelor’s
degrees from the University of Nebraska. She taught at Simpson College
for 13 years, where she served as department chair of communication
studies and division chair of policy studies. She also served as
a policy analyst in the Nebraska governor’s office, researching
and preparing speeches for then-Governor Bob Kerrey.
Professor Carol King
’84, assistant professor of business administration,
began teaching part-time at Dana in 1994, but moved to a full-time
position this fall. She has also taught courses at College of St.
Mary in Omaha. King earned her bachelor of science degree in accounting
from Dana in 1984. She completed her master’s at the University
of Nebraska-Omaha in 1997 and earned her CPA in 1991.
Professor Carl
Scheuermann, instructor of mathematics, received his
master’s in mathematics from the University of Nebraska-Omaha
and his bachelor’s in education from California University
of Pennsylvania. He worked as a graduate assistant in the Learning
Center at UNO, tutoring math and writing, and mentoring at-risk
students.
Dr. Albert Snow,
assistant professor of chemistry, received his doctorate and master’s
degrees in organic chemistry from the University of Oklahoma and
his bachelor’s from Arkansas Tech University. While at OU,
he served as vice-chair of the Graduate Student Senate. Last year,
Snow was a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at Wichita
State University.
Professor Starla
Stensaas, associate professor of graphic design, received
her master’s of fine art in art from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee,
and her master’s and bachelor’s from Eastern Illinois
University. She is returning to Dana after teaching at Southern
Illinois University and Nebraska Wesleyan University.
Dr. Thomas Wicks ’68,
associate professor of education, earned his doctorate in educational
foundations from Iowa State University and a bachelor’s degree
in elementary education from Dana. He also holds degrees from the
University of Nebraska-Omaha and Waldorf Junior College. Wicks is
an expert in curriculum and assessment, and is returning to teaching
after working as a consultant in Minnesota for several years. Wicks
served as an assistant professor at Kansas State University, and
has extensive experience as a principal and superintendent of schools
in Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska.
