The Higher Learning Commission recently presented
Dana President Dr. Myrvin Christopherson ’61
with its Certificate of Recognition for “four years of dedicated
service to the Commission as a member of the accreditation Review
Council.” Christopherson has served on the council and as
a reader of accreditation visit reports of private colleges and
universities that seek accreditation with the commission, which
accredits all colleges and universities in the 23-state region of
the North Central Association. Christopherson will continue as a
site team visitor and team chair for the Higher Learning Commission.
Professor Starla Stensaas,
associate professor of graphic design, was invited to attend a technology
roundtable at the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts at Wabash
College this summer. The roundtable was focused on the formation
of the Editorial Board for AcademicCommons.org, an interactive web
portal sponsored by the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts to
provide a forum for academic professionals interested in investigating
educational technologies within a liberal arts context. Stensaas
was invited to serve on the Editorial Board with colleagues from
Emerson, Wesleyan, Alma, Wagner and Wabash. She will curate a portion
of the site dedicated to showcasing outstanding student and faculty
hypertexts as well as innovative uses of technology in the classroom.
Launch of the site is expected in January 2005.
Patti Nielsen, R.N.,
director of health services had an article titled, “Time for
Renewal” published in the Sept./Oct. edition of the Journal
of American College Health. The article stressed the need for health
professionals to attend American College Health Association conferences,
suggested innovative sources of funding during budget cut-backs
and offered ideas for applying continuing education to the workplace.
Professor Chris Fear,
head men’s basketball coach and instructor of physical education,
spoke at the Metro Basketball Coaches Association Clinic in Omaha
on Sept. 29. He presented his coaching philosophy to approximately
100 area high school coaches.
Dr. William Hall, assistant
professor of music, had the abstract to his dissertation “A
Critical-Performing Edition of the Franz Krommer Parthia for Band
(1825) for American Concert Band” printed in the Fall 2004
Research Report of the College Band Directors National Association.
Dr. Peggy Holloway, visiting
assistant professor of music, attended the International Symposium
“Nadia Boulanger and American Music” Oct. 7 –
9 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The symposium was held
in honor of the 25th anniversary of the death of Nadia Boulanger,
who was the teacher of countless American composers including Aaron
Copland, Virgil Thompson and Philip Glass. The event was attended
by more than 100 musicians and scholars from around the world, the
majority of whom had studied and worked with Boulanger. Holloway
presented a lecture-recital on Marion Bauer, Boulanger’s first
American student. She performed one song by Boulanger and four by
Bauer. Two of the Bauer songs appear in a new edition of Bauer’s
previously unpublished songs edited by Holloway.
