In January 1983, I spent the Interim with 10 other Dana students
and Dr. John W. Nielsen ("Pope John") visiting England,
France, Germany, Italy and Denmark. Our study topic was the lives
of the saints so, of course, one of the highlights was visiting
the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica. As we were touring St.
Peter's,
our group of 12 got separated into two groups. I was in one group,
Dr. Nielsen was in the other. Eventually, someone in my group
spotted
our professor and said, "There's the Pope!"
The acoustics in St. Peter's are wonderful and immediately all
the tourists in the vicinity had their cameras at the ready and
were excitedly looking for the Holy Father. Our handful of students
from Nebraska quietly rejoined our leader! This trip was one of
the highlights of my years at Dana and I remain very grateful to
"the Pope" for his willingness to plan the trip and serve
as chaperone, tour guide, interpreter and teacher.
