I graduated from Dana in May 1977, and was one of the fortunate
ones to travel with Pope John and about 20 fellow student to Europe
for five weeks. We left Omaha just after Christmas 1976, spending
New Year's Eve in Longon. I recall the girls queuing up to kiss
the "Bobbies" at Midnight in Trafalgar Square. There were
thousands of locals there — It is the hot spot to be on New
Year's Eve.
Our focus was architecture and cathedrals. We visited England,
the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Italy and France. We saw all
the major cathedrals and many hidden local attractions, known to
Dr. Nielsen because of his extensive travel and contacts. Having
never traveled much before then, I blame this trip for my love of
world travel. By spending almost a week in the major countries,
we really got to see and do many things. From little cafes in Paris,
where writers hung out, to statues and buildings designed by the
Masters, we enjoyed our newfound pleasures of the Old World.
For less than $1,000 1977 US, we received the trip (and education)
of a lifeltime.
