VIKINGS ADD FOUR NEW HEAD COACHES
Marcy Roff
Softball
Former Simpson Storm standout Marcy Roff has been
hired as the new head softball coach.
Roff played college softball at Simpson College in
Indianola, Iowa. During her collegiate career she garnered several
individual honors and was a member of the 1997 NCAA Division III
championship team. The standout pitcher was named Second Team All-Conference
and All-Region during her collegiate career.
She comes to Dana from Knoxville, Iowa, where she
was a seventh grade science teacher and an assistant softball coach
at Central College. She helped lead the Dutch to the NCAA Division
III championship in 2003.
“I am very excited about the addition of Marcy
to our staff,” said Jim Krueger, director of athletics. “I
believe her coaching background and experience as a college athlete
will enhance our women’s softball program.”
Bill Danenhauer
Football
Dana’s football program will keep its momentum
going with the appointment of former offensive coach Bill Danenhauer
to the head coaching spot for 2003.
Danenhauer began working at Dana as offensive coordinator
in 2001. He was promoted to assistant head coach in 2002. He also
serves as assistant athletic director.
The former NFL and USFL player was an all-conference
tackle at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1980. Danenhauer coached
at the collegiate level at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.,
and St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn. He also performed
as a professional wrestler under different stage names in the 1980s.
Danenhauer succeeds Jim Krueger who served as head
coach of the Vikings for 10 years before stepping down in the spring
of 2003 to become Dana’s athletic director.
Chad Gorman
Baseball
Chad Gorman, former assistant baseball coach, will
be the new head baseball coach for the 2003 Great Plains Athletic
Conference champion Vikings.
“Coach Gorman has done an outstanding job as
an assistant and has a strong repoire with the players,” said
Jim Krueger, athletic director. “I see him doing the same
as the new head coach.”
Gorman has been with Dana’s baseball team since
2000. In addition to assistant duties, he also served as head junior
varsity coach and strength coordinator.
Gorman was a standout for Lakeland College in Sheboygan,
Wis., in the 1990s. He then played semi-professional baseball for
four years with the Sheboygan A’s. Gorman was an infielder
and catcher and had a lifetime batting average of .348 with the
A’s.
“With Coach Gorman taking over, I see the program
contining with strong consistency,” Krueger said.
Bob Spangler ’00
Cross
Country
Four-time Viking national cross country qualifier
Bob Spangler ’00 is returning to Dana to take on the head
cross country position.
Spangler, who ran under outgoing cross country coach
Jim Birmingham, said he plans to continue the program’s success.
With the graduation of several top runners in the last couple of
years, Spangler will also be looking to rebuild. One of his top
priorities is to improve the women’s cross country team.
In addition to his cross country honors, Spangler
was a three-time All-American in the marathon, and an indoor track
All-American in the 5,000-meter distance relay. He has also been
appointed assistant track coach, replacing Ted Murray, who has become
an admissions counselor.
He will also be spending this fall completing his
master’s degree in special education at the University of
South Dakota.
