TWO JOIN DANA BOARD OF REGENTS
A financial notable and a Blair medical pillar became
the two newest members of the Dana College Board of Regents in the
fall. The Regents are the guiding body of Dana College and meet
to decide on measures to ensure Dana’s prosperous future.
Merlyn Minderman
A knowledge of finance and a strong background in
community service are just two of the attributes that Merlyn Minderman
of York brings to the Dana College Board of Regents.
Minderman was a 1953 graduate of Avoca High School.
His post-graduate education included studies at the National Business
Institute and the University of Nebraska, along with banking schools
at the University of Oklahoma and Southern Methodist University.
He began his banking career at the Continental National
Bank in Lincoln, working parttime while he was still a student.
He was on active duty with the U.S. Army from 1955-57, returning
to banking at Continental National Bank until 1960. He then spent
15 years with Gateway Bank in Lincoln in operations, as a loan officer
and director.
He made his move in 1975 to York’s First National
Bank (now Cornerstone Bank). He served as the senior loan officer
and in financial services before his retirement in 2000. Although
retired, he continues to serve as a member relations consultant
for both the American Bankers Association and National Business
Association.
Retirement may not truly describe his lifestyle, since
he continues to serve as a director of the Cornerstone Bank, the
Albion National Management Company and Sutton Agency; as Advisory
Director of First National Bank and Trust of Syracuse; as vice president
and director of S & M Farms, Inc., and the vice chairman of
the York Housing Authority.
He is an active member of the First Evangelical Lutheran
Church in York and is also a member of the Sertoma Club, Chamber
of Commerce, the York County Development Corporation, the Country
Club and the York Ambassadors. He has served in a variety of leadership
positions with most of his service organizations.
He and his wife, Velda, have been married 47 years.
They have two children. Stephen, a real estate broker in Brandon,
Fla., and his wife, Audrey, have a daughter, Jordan, and are expecting
another child in February. Their daughter, Kathleen Plond, and her
husband, Doug, live in Garden City, Mich. They have two children,
Ashley and Brandon. His mother still lives in Syracuse, near where
Merlyn grew up.
Carol Weckmuller
A familiar face around Blair and the Dana campus also
joins the Board of Regents.
Dr. Carol Weckmuller is a life-long resident of Blair
and was born at Memorial Community Hospital, where she is now a
family physician. Her mother, Mary (Skobo ’50) Weckmuller,
who also lives in Blair, is a graduate of Dana with a bachelor of
science degree in nursing. Her father, Raymond Weckmuller ’52
also taught in the education department for 28 years before his
death in 1986.
Weckmuller has a 6-year-old daughter, Anna, who attends
North School in Blair.
Weckmuller graduated from Dana in 1980 with a degree
in biology and general sciences. She graduated from the University
of Nebraska College of Medicine, where she performed her family
practice residency.
She is a member of the American Academy of Family
Practice and the American Medical Association. She is board certified
by the American Board of Family Practice and is also currently the
medical director at Good Shepard Home in Blair. Her special interests
in medicine are geriatrics and women’s health, including breast
cancer and preventive medicine.
She was named an Outstanding Young Alumna of Dana
College in 1995.
Weckmuller said she is excited about joining the Dana
College Board of Regents.
“My family and I have quite a bit of history
with the school, and I’m very interested in its welfare,”
she said. “Dana is an excellent educational institution, and
I’m looking forward to the work involved in assuring it continues
its tradition of excellence for future generations.”
