Sexual assault, sexual harassment and other forms of sexual abuse happen every day and on every college campus.   Nationally one in four women will be raped in her lifetime.  Current national research suggests that female college students who live on college campuses are at higher risk than women in the general community.  Each calendar year, it is estimated that nearly 5% of college women are raped.  Males can also be victims of sexual aggression.  It is estimated that between 3 to 6 percent of men have been raped.  National studies have found that the incidence of college rape happens at about the same rate at all sizes of college campuses.

A major problem associated with sexual assaults on campuses are the number of unreported incidents.  Reasons that people do not report  can include; confusion as to whether consent was given, self-blame, overwhelming emotions, fear of others reactions, fear of retaliation by the offender, fear of judgment, unsure of reporting procedures, and the belief that the offender would not be held accountable.
