AWARD-WINNING QUILTER TO PRESENT
AT SIGHTS AND SOUNDS
Reservations being taken now for annual Scandinavian festival
Janice Lippincott never realized she was artistic until friends
encouraged her to start quilting 12 years ago. A former Blair bridal
shop owner, Lippincott had sewn all her life, but never knew she
had the ability to create art from fabric.
Now, 12 years later, Lippincott is widely regarded as one of the
best art quilters in Nebraska. She has won Best Wall Hanging at
the Nebraska State Fair and many other awards at events across the
region. Her quilts have been featured in books, magazines and hung
as art in local businesses.
Lippincott will share her love for quilting at Dana College’s
annual Sights and Sounds of Christmas celebration Sunday, Dec. 8.
She’ll present “Sharing His Gifts Through Quilting”
from noon to 2 p.m. in Mickelsen Hall on the Dana campus. Lippincott’s
presentation is one of many events that make up Dana’s annual
Scandinavian Christmas celebration.
“Janice Lippincott is one of the premiere quilters in our
region,” said Anne Christopherson, Dana director of special
projects and Sights and Sounds planner. “Her works have been
an inspiration to many and can be seen in churches, local banks,
nursing homes and many private homes.”
Lippincott said she will tailor her presentation to the audience,
offering tips and advice, as well as general information. She will
have a large display of finished quilts as well as a few that are
in progress.
She cautions, though, that her work is not what you might expect.
“A lot of people think of quilting as what Grandma did —
bed quilts,” she said. Lippincott specializes in art quilts,
which resemble paintings more than traditional quilts. In particular,
Lippincott produces spectacular landscape quilts, usually displayed
on walls. She is currently creating an image of Pike’s Peak
as seen from a balcony.
The presentation also has a spiritual side. Lippincott sees her
abilities as a gift from God. She never sells her work for profit,
choosing to give it away out of love instead.
“God has given me this gift,” she said. “I teach
because I want to share with others what I have learned.”
Reservations are not necessary to see Lippincott’s presentation.
The purchase of a $5 all-events admission button. The button will
