DANA COLLEGE CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS WITH SIGHTS, SOUNDS & TASTES

Reservations now being taken for Sights & Sounds of Christmas’s signature event

The schedule is set and preparations are underway for Dana College’s popular annual Christmas celebration, Sights and Sounds of Christmas, Dec. 7 and 8, on Dana’s campus in Blair, Neb.

The two-day, Scandinavian-themed festival is packed with concerts, food, drama productions, exhibits, demonstrations, crafts and more.

Designed to be family-friendly, all of the events are entertaining for all ages, with some especially designed with hands-on activities to fascinate and engage children. Visitors can gain entry to more than 20 different events with the purchase of a Sights & Sounds button for just $5.

The buttons will be available at the door to every event during the festival, but reservations are encouraged for the famous Scandinavian Smorgasbord ($15.50 for adults, $9.50 for children under 12). This year Dana is offering eight limited settings of the Smorgasbord. The cuisine includes authentic Scandinavian cuisine, including frikadeller (meat balls), medisterpølse (sausage) and salmon, as well as 22 additional items carefully selected and prepared in consultation with the executive chef of The Danish Home in Chicago.

Reservations can be made by visiting the event’s web site, www.dana.edu/sightsandsounds, or by calling the Dana College Relations Office, (402) 426-7216. Seats for the Smorgasbord are limited and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so if visitors have a specific time in mind, they are encouraged to make reservations early. Times for the Smorgasbord are 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, and 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.

Events in this year’s festival include:

  • “A Long Way From Home,” an original play by Dana College Professor Dr. Paul Schneider and starring students from the Dana College Theater
  • Christmas Forté and Mezzo Forté, two musical groups made up mainly of Dana alumni and their children
  • The Dana College Chorale and Concert Band Concert, featuring Dana’s acclaimed musical groups in what many see as the focal point of the festival. Both groups have toured throughout the United States and Europe and will be performing holiday-themed selections. This concert is scheduled so as not to conflict with other events. This year the concert will be offered at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.
  • Faculty Trio Recital, with seasonal selections performed by three of Dana’s experienced music faculty
  • Julestuen, a Danish Christmas presentation put on by Dana College students and our Danish professor, Trine Feuerborn
  • Scandinavian Folk Dancers
  • High School Choir Concert, this year featuring two Omaha choirs from Millard North High School and North High School
  • Quilt Show, by award-winning quilter and Blair native Janice Lippincott
  • Christmas Storyteller, with beloved stories for all ages
  • Viking Encampment and Demonstration, an authentic recreation of Viking life
  • Santa Lucia Quartet, performing traditional Danish favorites
  • Hans Christian Andersen Art Exhibit
  • Student Art Exhibit & Sale
  • Swedish Weavers, demonstrating traditional Scandinavian techniques
  • Wood Carving Exhibit, with live examples of the process
  • and more
