DANA'S SIGHTS & SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS
IS FOR MUSIC LOVERS
Six different musical groups
to perform at festival, Dec. 6 & 7
Dana College’s annual Scandinavian-themed Christmas festival,
Sights & Sounds of Christmas, is continuing its tradition of
offering a great lineup of local musical groups. At this year’s
festival, Dec. 6 & 7 on the college’s campus in Blair,
Neb., six musical acts are slated to appear, some with repeat performances.
The entire schedule of Sights & Sounds, consisting of more
than 20 events, is built around the Dana College Chorale & Concert
Band performance held at 4 p.m. on both Saturday, Dec. 6 and Sunday,
Dec. 7. The first half of the performance is by Dana’s internationally
known Chorale. All the Chorale’s selections are holiday-themed,
and several are solos performed by its talented student members.
Following the Chorale will be Dana’s acclaimed Concert Band,
also performing holiday classics, as well as newer selections.
This year’s special high school guest choir is from Blair
Area High School. The 83-member choir will be making its first appearance
in Dana’s new athletic and performance facility, the Gardner-Hawks
Center, also where the Dana College Chorale and Concert Band will
perform. The center’s state-of-the-art sound system and increased
seating should make these wonderful concerts even more enjoyable
than in the past.
On Saturday, Blair’s First Lutheran Male Choir will be providing
after-dinner entertainment for those attending the famous Scandinavian
Smorgasbord. Under the direction of Steve Bovendam, the choir will
be performing selections of sacred and secular music.
On Sunday, two groups will each be performing two concerts in Trinity
Chapel. Christmas Music Family & Friends is a potpourri of sacred
selections and popular favorites by a gathering of beloved local
musicians, together exclusively for Sights & Sounds. The Hand
Bell Choir & Faculty Trio is a concert shared by a beautiful,
13-member hand bell choir under the direction of Diane Fischer and
a cello, violin, organ/piano trio of Dana’s own faculty members,
Dr. Brian Viets, provost and dean of the college, Dr. Nicole Kaufman,
assistant professor of biology and Dr. Claire Bushong, assistant
professor of music.
Sunday also provides the chance to see a group of Scandinavian
folk dancers, performing to traditional music. This group is a returning
favorite to Sights & Sounds and shares the traditional dance
and costumes of Scandinavia in a program designed to appeal to all
ages.
Dana College’s Sights & Sounds of Christmas is two-day
festival is packed with concerts, food, exhibits, demonstrations,
