SIGHTS & SOUNDS IS A MUSIC-LOVER'S
DELIGHT
Several groups will perform

Scandinavian festival, Dec. 7 and 8
Several musical groups will be displaying their musical talents
during Dana College’s annual Sights & Sounds of Christmas
celebration, Dec. 7 and 8 on the college’s campus in Blair,
Neb.
The entire schedule of Sights & Sounds, consisting of more
than 20 events, is built around the Dana College Chorale & Concert
Band performance held at 4 p.m. on both Saturday, Dec. 7 and Sunday,
Dec. 8. The first half of the performance is by Dana’s internationally
known Chorale. All the Chorale’s selections are holiday-themed,
and several are solos performed by its talented student members.
Following the Chorale will be Dana’s acclaimed Concert Band,
also performing holiday classics, as well as newer selections.
Dana will showcase two Omaha high school choirs at 2 p.m. on Sunday,
Dec. 8. Adding a second choir is a change from previous years meant
to add to the musical variety of the day. This year’s choirs
are from Millard North High School and North High School.
Trinity Chapel will house alternating performances by two smaller
groups beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday and ending at 3 p.m. Three
of Dana’s music faculty will combine to perform a special
Christmas recital. Members of the trio include professors Jeanmarie
A. Nielsen, soprano; Michael Anderson, trumpet; and Dr. Claire Bushong,
organ. Alternating with the trio will be Christmas Forté,
performing their 14th cantata, “Sing Gloria.” This group
consists of four singers, one accompanist and a narrator who retell
the story of Christ’s birth through song. Members of Christmas
Forté along with their children will also provide post-dinner
entertainment on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. This group, called Mezzo
Forté, will be performing some of America’s all-time
favorite secular Christmas songs.
This year will also mark the last performance by the Santa Lucia
Singers, a longtime hallmark of Sights & Sounds. The Santa Lucia
Singers will be providing post-dinner entertainment following the
6:30 p.m. setting of Smorgasbord on Sunday. The program will be
a smaller version of the ceremony that has closed Sights & Sounds
for many years. Four Dana students will perform songs in Danish
while recreating a beloved Scandinavian tradition.
Sights & Sounds of Christmas is a two-day, Scandinavian-themed
festival packed with concerts, food, drama productions, exhibits,
demonstrations, crafts and more. Designed to be family-friendly,
all of the events are entertaining for all ages, with some especially
designed with hands-on activities to fascinate and engage children.
Visitors can gain entry to more than 20 different events —
including all of the musical events — with the purchase of
a Sights & Sounds button for just $5.
The buttons will be available at the door to every event during
the festival, but reservations are encouraged for the famous Scandinavian
Smorgasbord ($15.50 for adults, $9.50 for children under 12). This
year Dana is offering eight limited settings of the Smorgasbord.
The cuisine includes authentic Scandinavian cuisine, including frikadeller
(meatballs), medisterpølse (sausage) and salmon, as well
as 22 additional items carefully selected and prepared in consultation
with the executive chef of The Danish Home in Chicago.
Reservations can be made by visiting the event’s web site,
www.dana.edu/sightsandsounds, or
by calling the Dana College Relations Office, (402) 426-7216. Seats
for the Smorgasbord are limited and are available on a first-come,
first-serve basis. Times for the Smorgasbord are 5:30 p.m. on Saturday,
Dec. 7, and 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and
6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. Reservations will be accepted until
noon on Saturday. A limited number of tickets may be available the
day of the event.
