FINDING THAT FIRST JOB
How Do You Find Social Work Positions?
Our students find their jobs in a variety of ways. Every year a
few students are hired by their practicum agencies, which provide
wonderful
opportunities for making contacts with a network of social workers
who can help one to find a position. The Dana College Career
Services Office keeps track of social work positions, and many
prospective
employers write or call our office with requests for our graduates
to fill a position. Social work positions are advertised online
and in newspapers as well, and our alumni and advisory board
members are always on the lookout for good positions for our
students.
The
Social Work Department can often put you in touch with a graduate
in a geographical area where you would like to work. We encourage
our students to talk with us in their junior year about the types
of position which interest them, so we can start early to plan
the best ways to find that first position.
The Career Services Office keeps track of all Dana graduates
and reports to us their post-graduate “track record,” which
is exceptionally good. Dana graduates have attended such graduate
schools of social work as: Washington University in St. Louis, the
University of Nebraska at Omaha, the Jane Addams School of Social
Work at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Denver University,
the University of Minnesota, the University of Kansas, and the University
of Iowa. They report to us that they have felt well prepared for
their graduate studies.

Social Work Certification in Nebraska
Graduates of the Dana Social Work Program are eligible for
certification as bachelor’s level social workers in Nebraska (CSW). Students
are encouraged to complete the certification application forms (available
in the Social Work Office) during their last semester at Dana. It
is important to become certified, as this is required for many jobs,
and it is an advantage in seeking other positions. Certification
verifies that one has graduated from a CSWE - accredited baccalaureate
social work program.
