INSURANCE COVERAGE

Dana College provides professional liability insurance for all students who “are required to complete a specified number of hours, without salary, of practical experience in order to meet course requirements for graduation.” This applies to settings where the program has a signed practicum agreement with the agency. It does not apply when the student is an employee of the agency or if the student were an “independent contractor.” In such cases the program would expect the student to utilize the malpractice insurance available through the National Association of Social Workers.

Students driving to the field agencies in their own cars are expected to have the appropriate insurance. If they should transport clients in their own cars and an accident occurs, the students are responsible. It is strongly suggested that use of agency vehicles is more appropriate, should the need to transport clients arise.
