40.103 Introduction to Sociology 3
credits
An introduction to the subject matter, principles and methods of sociology
as the scientific study of the behavior of human beings in groups. This
course includes such topics as group dynamics, collective behavior, social
institutions, social control and social change.
40.111 Sociology of Crime 3 credits
An introduction to criminology, including the history of crime, theories
of crime, the different types of crime and how crime affects us sociologically
and the criminal justice system.
Prerequisite: 40.103 Introduction to Sociology.

40.255 Social Psychology 3 credits
A study of the effect of the group upon the behavior of the individual.
Included are such subjects as basic tendencies, norms, suggestion, group
behavior, custom, leadership, communication and public opinion.
40.246 Race and Ethnicity 3 credits
This course will focus on interracial and interethnic relations in the
United States from a socio-historic approach. Students will consider
theories and processes through which members of one group come to be
included within another including prejudice, discrimination, racism,
stereotyping and social distance.
Prerequisite: 40.103 Introduction to Sociology.
40.250 Social Problems 3 credits
This course will deal with many of the most controversial issues of the
day, including capitalism, poverty, unemployment, the welfare system,
racism, crime and sexism. Students will consider theories and perspectives
and use evidence to weigh the validity of competing perspectives.
40.261 Sociology of the Political Economy
3 credits
An introduction to the operation of government, the economy, social policy
making, and the inter-relationships between them. Emphasis will be placed
on how economic and political systems impact social policy development
and implementation and how social policy impacts the economic and political
system.

40.321 Juvenile Delinquency 3 credits
This course will explore the complexities of juvenile delinquency, sociological
theories of delinquency and societal responses to juvenile offenders.

40.341 Sex and Gender Roles in Society 3 credits
An examination of the changing roles of females and males as related
to social processes and institutions. Students will consider the implications
of these roles for work, family life, leisure activities and friendship
patterns.
Prerequisite: 40.103 Introduction to Sociology. Offered Fall
1999 and alternate years.
40.360A Crime, Justice and Corrections 3 credits
Explores the criminal justice system beginning with crime, continuing
the process through apprehension, adjudication, sentencing and the correctional
alternatives. Current theoretical and practice issues are addressed.
Prerequisite: 40.103 Introduction to Sociology and 40.111

40.369 Gerontology 3 credits

40.399 Special Topics 1-3 credits
A selected area of study in sociology. The topic is announced in the
appropriate semester's course schedule.
Prerequisite: Generally, sophomore standing or permission of instructor.
Offered as needed.
40.438 History and Theory of Sociology 3 credits
An examination of the historical development of social thought from sociology's
founder, Auguste Comte, and classic theorists Durkheim, Weber, and Marx
to contemporary theorists. The course will examine major sociological
concepts and schools of thought.
Prerequisite: 40.103 Introduction to Sociology and 6 additional credits
of sociology. Offered as needed.
40.459 Sociology Internship l-4 credits
On-the-job learning with a cooperating employer in coordination with
a faculty member. A minimum of 40 clock hours of supervised work is required
for each hour of credit. A maximum of 4 credits may be used toward the
sociology major. An additional 4 hours may be used toward the criminal
justice concentration or degree electives.
Prerequisite: Junior standing, major in sociology, 15 credits
in the major and permission of instructor and department
chair.
40.468 Seminar in Sociology 3 credits
A review of principle concepts of the discipline of sociology with a
focus on a special topic in sociology, such as sex roles, stratification,
formal organizations, death, gerontology, and political sociology.
Prerequisite: 40.337 Methods of Behavioral Research, 40.438 History
and Theory of Sociology (these courses may be taken concurrently), and
permission of instructor. Offered as needed.
40.479 Special Projects 1-3 credits
An opportunity to undertake special projects in fields of interest under
the supervision of a faculty member.
Prerequisite: Junior standing, 12 hours of sociology and permission
of department.
40.489 Readings in Sociology 1-3 credits
In-depth readings in a specific area of sociology. The student is expected
to meet regularly with a faculty member.
Prerequisite: 12 hours of sociology and permission of department.
40.499 Research in Sociology 1-3 credits
The opportunity to plan and carry out an independent research project
under the supervision of a faculty member.
Prerequisite: Junior standing, 12 hours of sociology and permission
of department.
