Vikings Take Two from Dordt

Sioux Center, Iowa ~ The Dana College softball stretched their winning streak to eight games with a weekend sweep of Dordt College.  Dana won game one 5-0 and then handed the Defenders an 11-0 loss in game two.

Game one saw Josie Barrow (JR, Woodward, IA) and Cassie Lager (JR, Missouri Valley, IA) combine of a two-hit shut out.  Barrow opened the game with a homerun to give the Vikings a quick 1-0 lead.  Dordt loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on a walk, an error, and a walk.  Barrow was able to pitch out of trouble to maintain her lead.  Dana stretched its lead to 2-0 as TJ Beeman (JR, Grimes, IA) tripled in Morgan Shields (SR, Britt, IA) in the third inning.  The Vikings put the game out of reach in the fifth inning as they pounded four hits and scored three runs.  Barrow, Sara Sempek (SR, Omaha, NE), Beeman, and Paige Brune (SO, Dodge, IA) all recorded hits in the inning.  Following two walks by Barrow in the bottom of the fifth, Coach Marcy Roff went to her bullpen and brought in Cassie Lager.  Lager proceeded to shut down the Dordt scoring threat and pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning to seal the win.

Game two saw Dana break out the bats as they pounded 14 hits and scored 11 runs.  Cassie Lager continued throwing a variety of un-hittable pitches for the win.  Lager allowed only two hits and did not give up a run.  The Vikings scored thee runs in both the first and fourth inning, a single run in the second, and put up four in the fifth to end the game.  April Groteluschen (SR, Columbus, NE) went four for four on the day with three runs scored and three RBI’s.  She also slapped two doubles.  Lindy Bohlmann (SO, Denison, IA) was two for four with an RBI.  Beth Richmond (SO, Chariton, IA) and Maggie Downs (JR, St. Charles, IA) each were two for three on the afternoon.  Richmond scored a run and Downs crossed home base twice.  Groteluschen, Brune, and Richmond each stole a base in the Dana win.

Dana was scheduled to take on Mt. Marty on Sunday, but it was postponed due to rain.  The game will be made up on Monday in Yankton, SD at 5:00pm.
