Softball Sweeps Four Games from GPAC Foes

The Dana College Softball team ran its conference winning streak to six games this week.  Dana swept a double header at home against Midland Lutheran on Wednesday and then swept Doane College on the road on Thursday.  Dana came out with 10-2 and 6-0 wins over Midland and 3-2 and 11-0 over Doane.

The initial game against Midland saw the two teams play close the first three innings.  Dana struck for two runs in the bottom of the second.  Lindy Bohlmann (SO, Denison, IA) doubled to right field.  Paige Brune (SO, Dodge, NE) then singled to left.  Janez Anderson (SR, Albion, NE) singled to center and drove both runs in.  Midland strung together two hits to draw within one in the top of the third.  Dana put the game away in the fourth inning as they exploded for seven runs on five hits.  Josie Barrow (JR, Granger, IA) plated three runs on a double to left.  Sara Sempek (SR, Omaha, NE) then scored Barrow on a double.  TJ Beeman (JR, Grimes, IA) pinch hit for Maggie Downs.  Beeman slapped a single to left field and drove in two more runs.  Dana allowed a single run in the top of the fifth.  Barrow led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to left field to end game one.  Barrow went 2-3 in game one four runs batted in and scored two runs.  She also got the win on the mound.  Sempek went 2-3 in the opening game with a run and RBI.  Beeman was 2-3 with two RBI’s.

Game two saw Dana shut out Midland 6-0.  Cassie Lager (JR, Missouri Valley, IA) continued her mound dominance with a complete game, fit hit performance.  Lager did not allow a run and struck out seven Warriors.  Dana scored two runs in the first on a Sara Sempek double and a Paige Brune single.  The Vikings then plated four in the sixth inning.  Josie Barrow slammed a three run homer to highlight the inning.

Thursday saw Dana hit the road to Crete, Nebraska.  Game one saw Dana struggle to brush off the rust from the road.  The Vikings found themselves down 2-1 at the end of two innings.  Dana took the lead in the top of the fifth.  Sara Sempek’s two RBI single gave the Vikings the lead and the win.  Josie Barrow went 5 2/3 innings for the win and had eight strike outs.  Cassie Lager pitched the last inning and a third to pick up the save.

Game two saw the Vikings thump the Tigers in five innings.  Dana struck for three runs in the second, five in the third, and three more in the fifth.  Barrow, Sempek, and Beth Richmond (SO, Chariton, IA) each hit doubles for Dana.  April Groteluschen (SR, Columbus, NE), Lindy Bohlmann (SO, Denison, IA), Beth Richmond, and Josie Barrow each slammed homers for Dana.  Cassie Lager picked up the win in game two.  Lager allowed three hits and struck out eight.

The Vikings improve to 24-13 overall and 11-1 in conference play.  Currently, Dana is sitting in first place ahead of an 11-3 Morningside team.  The Vikings are on the Road this weekend with double headers at Dordt on Saturday and at Mt. Marty on Sunday.
