Opportunities for enjoying a wide variety of activities come in many forms. Students are encouraged to become active members of the campus community and to participate in the program and activities provided. The following information attempts to identify the many different opportunities for involvement that exist at Dana College. Joining different clubs and organizations is also a great way to meet new and exciting people on campus.

AIGA
AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) is open to anyone who has an interest in graphic design and/or art. Throughout the year, AIGA has many activities open to all students on campus, which are of an art-related nature (Pictionary, art museum trips, speakers, etc.). Meetings are held periodically where upcoming events are discussed and planned.

Alpha Chi – Dr. Sybille Bartels, ext. 7276
Alpha Chi National Collegiate Honor Scholarship Society is open to selected juniors and seniors. To become members of the Nebraska Beta Chapter (the Dana College chapter) of Alpha Chi, students must be a junior or senior, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.70 including at least one academic year at Dana, and rank in the top ten percent of their class. The faculty determines final selection of membership.

Alpha Mu Gamma – Prof. Diana Brown, ext. 7273
Alpha Mu Gamma is the National Foreign Language Society at Dana. Student are selected for membership in Alpha Mu Gamma by Dana’s Foreign Language faculty members based on their excellence and accomplishments in Danish, German, or Spanish.

Ars Medica – Science Dept, ext. 7369
ARS Medica is an organization for Dana students interested in any of the health sciences. Activities are held throughout the year and include hosting conferences and speakers as well as sponsoring the Red Cross Bloodmobile on campus each spring.

Business Club – Dr. Susan Udey, ext 7287
The Business Club is open to all students regardless of major. The Business Club engages in business related activities, community service projects, and hosts students from the Vejle (Denmark) School of Business on their annual visit to the US.

Campus Crusade for Christ
This interdenominational Christian group provides regular opportunities to study and discuss the Bible, worship, and pray.

Cheerleading/Dance Team – Shad Beam, ext. 7389
The Dana College Cheerleaders and Dance Team are the spirit leaders for the Dana fans at football, basketball, and volleyball home games. Tryouts are held in the Spring and Fall for the positions on the Dana squad.

Chorale – Dr. Richard Palmer, ext. 7310
The Dana College Chorale is a renowned choral group that performs throughout the academic year. In addition to singing at Sights and Sounds and other campus events, the Chorale also performs in communities of Nebraska and Iowa. They also have toured throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. The Chorale is open to students of all majors and backgrounds by audition only. Chorale members must also be members of the Voices group.

College Republicans

This group promotes awareness on campus of political issues that relate to the Republican Party.

Concert Band

The Dana College Concert Band is the principal instrumental ensemble of Dana College. The Concert Band is open to all interested students regardless of major. The band performs to a variety of audiences, both on and off-campus. They also make periodic tours of the United States and Europe.

Dana Diplomats
– Admissions Office, ext. 7220
The Dana Diplomats are students who are employed in the college’s Office of Admissions. Diplomats are an important part of Dana’s Admissions Team. Tasks performed by members involve giving campus tours to prospective new students, helping with bulk mailings, assisting the counselors in preparation for high school visits, handling phone calls for information about Dana and sending material when requested, escorting prospective students to scheduled visits with faculty, coaches, or staff, eating with campus visitors in the cafeteria, and sometimes hosting guest overnight.

As student representatives of Dana College, qualities needed to become a Diplomat include: displaying a positive attitude, excellent communication skills, eagerness to meet and work with new people, energetic personalities, and enthusiastic smiles. This organization meets once each month and students selected to be Diplomats are required to attend.

Danian – Danian office, ext. 7322, DC 219
The Danian is the annual yearbook of Dana College. It is student designed, written, and edited. The Danian covers all aspects of campus activities and student life. Anyone interested in writing, editing, photography, and/or layout and design is encouraged to participate in the yearlong process.

Delta Mu Delta – Dr. James Smith, ext 7905
Delta Mu Delta is the National Business Honor Society. Business majors at colleges accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs are eligible based on the following criteria: Students must: a) be candidates for the baccalaureate degree in business; b) have completed at least half of the credits required for the degree (27); c) have a cumulative average of .2 above a B or better; d) be in the top 20 percent of their class (highest 20% of the junior or senior class); e) be of good standing.

DVTV – Gregg Pejsar, ext. 7202 Studio: DC 230
Dana’s own student-operated television station can be seen on local cable TV. All student’s interested in the field of television and television production are encouraged to participate.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes
FCA is another opportunity for students to be involved in Christian ministry on campus. While the name implies involvement in intercollegiate athletics, membership is not restricted to student-athletes. On the contrary, many FCA members are not part of any of the college’s athletic programs. The FCA chapter meets weekly during the school year. A variety of speakers and discussion allow all interested students to integrate their faith with the college experience.

German Club – Dr. Sybille Bartels, ext. 7276
Everyone enrolled in a German class is automatically a member. All other students who have an interest in German and German culture are also invited to join. The purpose of the organization is to provide students with opportunities to experience the language and culture outside of the classroom in a fun, social environment.

Hawaiian Club
The Hawaiian Club promotes Hawaiian culture and keeps Hawaiian tradition alive at Dana College. It also is an opportunity for students to support each other, as some students have come to Dana College from great distances. The club is open to all students and holds an annual Luau for everyone to enjoy.

Hermes – DC 220, ext. 7328
The Hermes is the official campus newspaper written and published by students at Dana College. It is distributed on a weekly basis, except holidays during the Fall and Spring academic semesters. The newspaper offers hand-on experience in the media through a variety of work including: writing, desktop publishing, digital photography, graphics, cartooning, advertising sales, editing, darkroom work, and layout.

The use of state of the art computer equipment fosters a high degree of computer literacy among its staff. Readers and campus organizations are encouraged to submit story ideas, comments, and letters to the editor expressing their points of view to: hermes@acad2.dana.edu or via campus mail box 1086.

Submissions must be received by 9 a.m. Tuesday to be printed in the weekly issue.

HOPE (Helping Our People Expand)
Founded in 1989 by a group of American and International students of color, the HOPE organization focuses on campus-wide unity, ethnic and racial pride, and cultural diversity. The group promotes cultural acceptance and understanding, helps acculturate international students, and offers culturally diverse events and activities aimed at enriching campus life.

International Student Organization

This group promotes cultural acceptance and understanding, helps acclimate international students, offers diverse programs and events aimed at enriching campus life. ISO provides a variety of social and cultural opportunities for all Dana students.

Intramurals and Club Sports – Shad Beam, ext. 7389
The primary purpose of the intramural program is to give all interested students an opportunity to develop further interest and skill through competition and participation. A full-year program of leagues, tournaments, challenge boards, etc. offer opportunities in individual, dual and team sports. New activities are offered whenever student interest warrants.

KDCV – DC 224, ext. 7345 or 7205
Be a disc jockey, cover news and sports, learn fundamental radio production skills and participate in fun station promotions at Dana’s very own radio station KDCV! Dana’s campus radio station, KDCV-FM (91.1), provides an outstanding opportunity for all students to be "on-the-air" and learn about broadcast communications in an enjoyable and team-oriented working environment. Students can work at KDCV for class credit, as paid work study or campus employment, or just for fun!

KDCV presents a multi-faceted format for its listeners on campus and in Blair. Modern rock (alternative and metal) is the primary music, but students are free to select virtually any type of music for their respective air shifts. Sunday programming is primarily oriented toward supporting the mission of Dana as a Christian college. KDCV also covers Dana athletic events, both home and away.

Optimist Club
This group promotes community feeling through service projects on and off campus.

Orientation Leaders – Student Life, ext. 7253
New Student Orientation introduces incoming freshman and transfer students to life on campus prior to the start of each new fall semester. During these three or four days of a variety of activities and programs are offered.

Leading the programs are specially selected Orientation Team Leaders. The Team Leaders are all volunteers and are chosen through an application and screening process that takes place at the beginning of each spring semester. All students who are interested in helping new students through this important transition from high school to college, are willing to commit themselves to the semester of preparation and the 3-5 days at the start of the fall semester, and generally have a high level of enthusiasm for Dana College and the strong desire to make a difference, are encouraged to apply. There is also a minimum 2.5 GPA for all Orientation Team Leaders.

Pep Band – Prof. Bill Hall, ext. 7902
Members of the Dana College Concert Band also participate in the Dana College Pep Band. The Pep Band provides musical entertainment and encouragement at selected home athletic events.

Recreation Activities – Athletic Office, ext. 7290
Borup Coliseum has an indoor pool, a racquetball court, a weight room, wrestling room, and areas for basketball and volleyball. Outdoors there are two tennis courts, a sand volleyball pit, running track, outdoor basketball court, and several grassy areas for football and soccer. The Campus Center has foosball, pool tables, and ping-pong tables.

Residence Hall Association – Student Life, ext. 7255
The purpose of the Residence Hall Association is to support the mission and objectives of the Residence Life program. RHA also works closely with the hall directors to address the concerns of residents in the halls. Representatives are elected from each floor although all residential students are invited to attend RHA meetings. Regular events sponsored by RHA include Vegas and Carnival Nights, Li’l Siblings Weekend and Applerama.

Social Awareness Organization– Prof. Jan Potter, ext. 7238
The Social Awareness Organization is open to all members of the Dana Community who have interest in broadening the understanding of social issues. SAO is an active and visible group on campus sponsoring a variety of activities during AIDS Week, Women’s Week, and Random Acts of Kindness Week. SAO has also volunteered at Voices for Children’s Day and at Good Shepherd Nursing Home to play bingo. They also go Trick or Treating for others in October to gather food, clothing, and toys to be donated to local pantries. SAO has arranged for speakers, concerning such issues as sexual harassment, the grief process, and eating disorders. The goal of SAO is to involve Dana students in positive contributions to Dana College and the Blair community.

The Sower
The Sower, Dana’s literary anthology, is a collection of art, poems, prose, short stories, and photography composed by Dana students. The Student Senate and the college’s English department sponsor this publication. The Sower, published each spring, is edited by an English or language arts major and graphic design major, but all members of the Dana student body are encouraged to submit entries for publication.

Student Education Association
The Student Education Association (SEA) group at Dana College is intended for education majors. It is student led and is an aide for those students wanting to pursue a career in the education field. It participates in various activities throughout the academic year and gives support to those in need.

Student Senate
Student Senate at Dana is organized through an elected process. Student Senate functions as the legislative agency of the Student Body within the guidelines of the Dana College Student Body Constitution and By-Laws. Every full-time student at Dana is a member of the Student Body and pays dues for the support of Senate functions and responsibilities. The Senate consists of four representatives from each class and 4 executive staff members. Qualifications include having a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and not being on either academic or disciplinary probation. Officers of the Student Senate for 2003-2004 are:

Student Homecoming, Winterfest, and Spring Fling Committee – Lisha Palm, Coordinator of Student Activities, ext. 7268
This is a campus wide committee that reports to the Dana College Student Senate. The committee is responsible for coordinating and implementing the events and activities associated with the Dana College Homecoming, Winterfest, and Spring Fling. Traditional events are contests, tournaments, dances, Carnival and Vegas Nights, coronation, and the sale of memorabilia. Committee members represent various organizations on campus. Anyone interested in working on this committee should contact the committee advisor.

Viking Film Society
VFS views and discusses a wide variety of film genres to increase awareness on the artistry of film.

Voices – Dr. Richard Palmer, ext. 7310
Dana Voices is a choral group where members are not subject to an audition to join. Membership is open to all Dana students, staff, and faculty. A variety of types of music are performed.

Young Democrats
This group promotes awareness on campus of political issues that relate to the Democratic Party.
