Kitchens
Each residence hall has its own kitchen facility. Students interested in preparing food in the halls are encouraged to use the kitchens, particularly if extensive cooking is involved. Students are responsible for cleaning of items used in food preparation. Hall kitchens can be closed, at the discretion of the Hall Director, if kitchen items are not regularly cleaned.

Laundry and Ironing Facilities
Each residence hall has coin-operated washers and dryers. If a machine is out of order it should be reported immediately to the building's Resident Assistant, Assistant Hall Director, or Area Hall Director. Ironing boards are also available, but students must supply their own irons. Refunds for out-of order washers or dryers are available at the Business Office.

Heating and Air Conditioning
Blair and Holling Halls have a two-pipe heating and cooling system. This technology was prevalent in the early 1960s when most of our buildings were constructed. Unfortunately, with two-pipe systems, it is impossible to make a quick transition from heating to air conditioning. These are not like the systems in your home that can be switched over quickly. Usually it takes several days for the Maintenance Department to change over all the valve configurations, purge the system and start-up the switch over.

Argo and Mickelsen Halls do not have air conditioning. Students who feel the need for this type of comfort are encouraged to request rooms in the other halls.

During the months of September, October, April, and May, outdoor temperatures become very unstable. For example, it might be cool a couple of days and then very warm the next, or very cool in the morning and quite warm in the afternoon. This unpredictability makes it extremely difficult to provide consistent comfort levels in the residence halls. An additional problem is caused by convection which will make the 3rd and 4th floors warmer than the 1st and 2nd.

If the heating or cooling in your room or residence hall is in need of attention, please contact Maintenance at ext. 7399. Maintenance personnel will try to do whatever they can to help you, but please keep in mind that the systems operate as indicated above.

Telephones
There is a telephone line into each student's room. Students are responsible for providing their own telephones. Alltel is the long distance carrier for Dana. Students may either sign up for service with Alltel, or they may use their own calling cards. The Business Office coordinates this option.

Vending Machines
Machines dispensing canned pop and packaged snacks are located in all residence halls. Refunds for money lost in vending machines is to be obtained from the Information Center. Any machine that is not working properly or is empty should be reported to the building Area Hall Director/Assistant Hall Director or the Information Center.
