Track Opens Season at Iowa State
Ames, Iowa ~ The men’s and women’s indoor track teams traveled to Ames, Iowa this weekend to take place in the Iowa State Open. Both teams would face stiff competition from NCAA Division I, II and III teams, as well as NAIA and Junior College squads.
The Dana Men’s thrower squad was the highlight of the tournament. The throwers placed three individuals in the top nine of the Shot Put. Jeremy Havener (SR, Clarinda, IA) was the top placer of any Dana College athlete. Havener placed fifth in the Shot Put with a throw of 48 feet 3 inches. Close behind Havener was Roger Goff (SO, Missouri Valley, IA). Goff finished in 8th place with a throw of 46 feet 4.75 inches. Chase Trecek (FR, Bellevue, NE) finished in 9th place with a throw of 45 feet 11.25 inches. Beau Viergutz (SO, Norfolk, NE) finished in 19th place in the shot with a throw of 43 feet 10 inches.
The top women’s finisher was Jennifer Anderson (JR, Lincoln, NE) in the 5000 meter run. Anderson placed 24th in the 5000 meter run with a time of 20:31.91 minutes. Nichelle Kimbrough (SR, Highland, KS) placed 32nd in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet 4 inches. Tina Castle (SO, Farragut, IA), who missed all of cross country season with an injury, opened her indoor campaign with a 33rd place effort in the 600 meter run. Castle clocked in with a time of 1:39.49 minutes.
“I am very pleased with our performance on Friday and Saturday,” comment Head Men’s Track Coach Allen Friesen. “The kids competed very well and better than they thought they would. This meet should give them a great deal of confidence heading into the rest of the indoor season.”
The Viking runners and throwers will next participate in Dordt Invitational in Sioux Center, Iowa on February 3rd. Opening gun is scheduled to go off is yet to be announced.
