Track Competes at ISU Open

The Dana College men’s and women’s track teams traveled to Ames, Iowa, last weekend to participate in the ISU Track and Field Open.  The Viking athletes competed against tough competition from NCAA Division I, II, and II, along with top teams in the junior college ranks and NAIA.
 
Megan Higgins (FR, Council Bluffs, Iowa) gave the Vikings their top finish on the women’s side.  Higgins placed 12th in the shot put with a toss of 38 feet 4 inches.  Laura Waller (FR, Omaha, Neb.) placed 15th in the pole vault with a vault of 8 feet 6.25 inches.
 
Jeremy Barrera (FR, Round Rock, Texas) continued his torrid pace in the 60-meter hurdles for the Vikings.  Barrera finished in ninth place with a time of 8.43 seconds. Derek Hoffman (FR, Edgar, Neb.) broke his own indoor pole vault record this weekend.  Hoffman placed 10th with a vault of 12 feet 7.5 inches.
 
“Our young kids are improving every meet; it is exciting to see,” said Head Track Coach Allen Friesen.  “We had a lot of personal records this week coming from our distance crew. We are further along than we were this time last year. The coaching staff is very excited what we have accomplished thus far.”
 
The track teams will split up this weekend as the throwers will compete at the Doane Throwers meet in Crete, Neb.  The remainder of the squad will travel to Sioux Center, Iowa, for the Dordt Invitational.
