The Dana College track teams
traveled to Vermillion, S.D., to take part in the USD/John Dalton
Memorial Open over the weekend. The Vikings had several impressive
finishes, including eight top ten performances.
Leading the way for the Vikings was Brandon Terry (JR,
Bellevue, Neb.) with a pair of top ten finishes. He placed seventh
in the 60-yard dash with a time of 7.2 seconds. Terry also earned an
eighth place finish in the 200-meter dash. Terry covered the track
in a time of 23.56 seconds.
Andrew Hawley (JR, Lincoln, Neb.) placed tenth in the
60-meter dash with a time of 7.22 seconds. Dan Staehlin (FR,
Omaha, Neb.) placed tenth in the 600 meter run with a time of
1:26.08 minutes. Eric Bane (SR, Oakland, Iowa) placed tenth
in the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:11.58 minutes.
The Vikings 4x800 meter relay team placed fifth with a time of
8:36.42. The relay team was comprised of Staehlin, Andrew
Palmblade (FR, Hastings, Neb.), Justin Nielsen (FR,
Omaha, Neb.), and Kevin Bane (SO, Oakland, Iowa).
Beau Viergutz (JR, Norfolk, Neb.) placed ninth in the shot
put with a throw of 46 feet 2.75 inches. George Drinnin (SO,
Omaha, Neb.) set the Dana College weight throw record with a toss of
47 feet 1 inch.
The loan top ten finisher on the women’s side was pole vaulter
Laura Waller (FR, Omaha, Neb.). Waller continued to improve
with a vault of 9 feet. Megan Higgins (FR, Council Bluffs,
Iowa) will be the third seed in the shot put in the Great Plains
Athletic Conference Championships this weekend.
“This weekend was an important weekend for some of our kids,” said
Head Track Coach Allen Friesen. “Some of them had to move up quite
a few spots just to qualify to get in to GPAC conference meet,
(which only takes the top 18 in each event) and some wanted to move
up to get a better seed. At the end of the day Dana College will be
taking 27 athletes to the GPAC Championship.”
The Vikings travel to Lincoln on Friday to take part in the Prairie
Wolf Invite. The GPAC conference meet will be held in Lincoln on
Feb. 23.
