Barrera and Relays Lead Vikings

The indoor track opened up with success on Saturday afternoon at the Ward Haylett Invite at Doane College on Saturday.  Jeremy Barrera (Round Rock, Texas) qualified for the NAIA National Indoor Track Meet in his first collegiate meet.  Dana’s 4x800 meter relay team brought home the Vikings’ lone event championship.

“We had a good first meet with several personal records,” said Dana Head Track Coach Allen Friesen.  “We had a strong performance from the freshman class.”

Barrera set the track team a buzz in his first collegiate meet.  The freshman tore through the 55-meter hurdle field for fourth place finish with a time of 7.86 seconds.  His time was fast enough for a provisional qualifying time for the NAIA National Indoor Meet in March.  He was .01 seconds off of direct qualification.

The Viking 4x800 meter relay team brought home a first place finish.  The team of Dan Staehlin (FR, Omaha, Neb.), Justin Nielsen (FR, Omaha, Neb.), Bryson Pascua (SO, Pearl City, Hawaii), and Andrew Palmblade (SO, Hastings, Neb.) brought home the title with a time of 8:45.96.

Andrew Hawley (SO, Lincoln, Neb.) placed fourth in the 55-meter dash in 6.75 seconds.  Derek Hoffman (FR, Edgar, Neb.) broke the Dana College indoor pole vault mark with his vault of 12 feet, 6 inches.  The 12 feet, 6 inch result was good enough for fifth place in the meet.  Hoffman broke the 56-year-old mark of 11 feet set by Ole Ahlquist.

Megan Higgins (FR, Council Bluffs, Iowa) earned a top five finish in her first collegiate meet in the shot put.  Higgins toss of 39 feet gave her a fourth place finish.  Freshman pole vaulter Laura Waller (Omaha, Neb.) placed seventh with a vault of 9 feet, 4 inches.  Her vault set an indoor track record.

Dana will travel to Vermillion, S.D., for the USD Invite on Saturday.
