Vikings Stumble in Conference Action

The Dana College volleyball team did not fare well last week in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.  The Vikings went 0-3 on the week as they dropped matches to Concordia, University of Sioux Falls and Mount Marty.

Dana won the first game 30-22 against Concordia on Tuesday evening, but then dropped the next three games consecutively, 19-30, 22-30, and 24-30.  The Vikings were led by Danielle Neville (FR, Grand Island, Neb.) with 12 kills.  Neville also served two aces and had 17 digs.  April Fitch (FR, Creighton, Neb.) and Lacie Greiner (SO, Boone, Iowa) each had ten kills.  Nichole Elwood (SO, Fremont, Neb.) dished out 33 set assists and served five aces for Dana.  She also had 10 digs on the evening.

Dana then traveled to South Dakota over the weekend for two conference matches against Sioux Falls and Mount Marty.  Dana dropped the opener on Friday night to the University of Sioux Falls 3-0 (30-14, 30-14, 30-23). Fitch and Greiner each had seven kills to lead the Vikings. Neville added six kills.  Greiner had 12 digs.

The Vikings then squared off against Mount Marty for the third time this season.  Dana swept the first two encounters, but the Lancers capitalized on their home court in five sets.  The two teams split the first four games (30-24, 21-30, 30-25, 24-30) before the Lancers captured the decisive game five (4-15). Fitch, Kali Brayfield (SO, Elkhorn, Neb.), Greiner and Neville all had double digit kills for Dana.  Fitch had 14 kills and a team-high two solo blocks.  Brayfield had ten kills on the day.  Greiner had 15 kills, two service aces, seven digs, and three block assists.  Neville led the team with 16 kills and had 16 digs.  Stephanie Connell (FR, Harlan, Iowa) and Elwood split time at setter.  Connell dished out 27 assists and had four kills.  Elwood had 14 assists.

The Vikings are now 7-17 overall and 1-8 in GPAC play.  Dana will host home games against Grace University on Tuesday and Morningside on Thursday this week. Varsity action starts at 7 p.m. for both dates.
