Trotter Leads Three Vikings in Double Digits in
Win
January 10, 2007
Seward, Nebraska ~ The road was much more
friendly to the women’s basketball team than home on Tuesday evening.
Dana stopped its two game slide as they defeated Concordia University in
GPAC action 73-65.
Dana found itself trailing much of the first half
as Concordia dominated the boards. The Bulldogs forced Dana into
several contested shots late in the shot clock. The Vikings were
limited to only one possession as the Bulldogs grabbed many rebounds.
Amanda Bryant (SO, Treynor, IA) kept the Vikings close as she
pulled Dana within three points with a jumper midway through the half.
Concordia tried to put the game out of the reach late in the half when
they went up by nine. Coach Mechels looked to her defense to keep the
game from getting out of hand. The Vikings held the Bulldogs scoreless
the last 2:19 of the half. Amy Nichol (JR, Des Moines, IA),
celebrating her birthday, stepped up and drained a three pointer to
stop the Concordia run and pull Dana within three points with less than
two minutes left in the half. Allie Lamb (SO, North English,
IA), playing for the first time in four games, hit two free throws with
two seconds left to pull Dana within one.
The second half saw Concordia stretch their lead to
seven points with 17 minutes left in the game. That served as a wake up
call for the Viking offense. Allie Lamb scored the next five Viking
points to pull Dana within two. Following a Bulldog turnover, Erin
Bazata (SO, Randolph, NE) drained a three pointer to give Dana its
first lead since early in the first period. Tricia Trotter (FR,
Treynor, IA) put Dana up for good as she hit a 15-foot jumper with 11
minutes left to go. The Vikings eventually stretched their lead to 11
as Heidi Gowery (FR, St. Helena, NE) hit one of two free throws.
The Bulldogs got a late lay-up to make the final score 73-65.
Tricia Trotter led all scorers with 16
points on 8 of 12 shooting. Allie Lamb scored 15 points in her
comeback and also pulled down a game high five rebounds. Amy Nichol
continued her solid play by adding 14 points and a team high four
assists.
“I was impressed on our tough play tonight,” said
Coach Brenda Mechels on her teams’ performance. “We played together as
a team. We trusted each other to take care of business.”
The win improves Dana to 2-7 in the GPAC and 8-9
overall. Concordia drops to 9-9 overall and 2-6 in the GPAC. Dana
steps out of conference play on Sunday, as they travel to Forrest City,
IA to square off against Waldorf College. Tip off is scheduled for
2:00pm. Dana will resume conference play on January 17 as they travel
to Hastings.
