Vikings Fall to Chargers
Sioux City, Iowa ~
The Viking Women’s Basketball team dropped its third
straight game on Wednesday evening. Dana fell on the road to Briar
Cliff 68-63.
It looked like the Vikings would get
revenge following their 75-74 overtime loss at home to Briar Cliff in
November. The Vikings jumped out to a 12-6 lead midway through the
first half as Amanda Bryant (SO, Treynor, IA) hit a jumper in the
lane. The Chargers would not give in at home. Briar Cliff defended
their home court and whittled the lead down to one with five minutes
remaining. Amy Nichol (JR, Des Moines, IA) stopped the 13-8 BC
run by knocking down two free throws. Dana stretched its lead back to
seven points just before the end of the half on a Tricia Trotter
(FR, Treynor, IA) jumper.
The second half saw both teams come
out and exchange baskets. Once again Briar Cliff brought the lead to
one point, before Dana responded. Amanda Bryant hit a jumper in
the lane to stop the bleeding for the moment. Following three
consecutive turn overs and a foul, Briar Cliff took the lead with 13:30
remaining in the game on a pair of free throws. Dana was unable to pull
even or regain the lead from that moment. A Tricia Trotter
three-pointer cut the Charger lead to eight with 25 seconds remaining.
Erin Bazata (SO, Randolph, NE) hit a jumper at the basket to make
the final margin five points.
Amanda Bryant
was one of three Vikings in double digit scoring, but it
was not enough. Bryant had her second straight game over 20 points with
22 on Wednesday. She also pulled down nine rebounds, which was a game
high. Amy Nichol had 14 points before fouling. Tricia
Trotter added ten points. Heidi Gowery (FR, St. Helena, NE)
dished out five assists.
The loss drops Dana to 9-12 on the
season and 2-10 in conference play. Dana remains on the road this
weekend as they travel to Midland Lutheran. The Warriors knocked off
Dana 66-50 earlier in the month at Dana. Tip-off is scheduled for
2:00pm.
