Vikings fall despite Three in Double Figures

Blair, Nebraska ~ Looking to move up in the conference standings, the women’s basketball team hosted Concordia University on Tuesday evening.  Dana trailed most of the first half, before gaining a slim lead midway thought the second half.  Despite the come back, the Vikings were subdued by the Bulldogs 64-62.

The first half was not a pretty display of basketball for the Vikings women’s team.  Dana was a frigid 12 of 35 from the field and one of eight from the three point arch.  Despite the poor shooting, Dana found itself down only five points going into half time.

The second half saw Dana shake its shooting woes and climb back into the game.  The Vikings were down 40-30 with 16 minutes remaining in the game.  Dana used a 10-2 run to pull within a bucket with only 12 minutes remaining.  Amanda Bryant (SO, Treynor, IA) scored a fast break lay-up to even the score with 10 minutes remaining in the game.  Amy Nichol (JR, Des Moines, IA) then sank two free throws to put Dana up two with four minutes left.  The Vikings held a slim lead until under a minute remained when the Bulldogs drained a three pointer.  Tricia Trotter (FR, Treynor, IA) hit two free throws to pull Dana back to within a point.  Amy Nichol then drove the lane with a five second remaining. Nichol got her shot off, but to the coaches and fans dismay, no foul was called.  Nichol grabbed her rebound and was unable to get off a clean look as the horn sounded.

Amanda Bryant led all Vikings with 18 points on eight of 13 shooting.  Amanda Bryant had 15 points and two blocked shots.  Amy Nichol chipped in 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and five steals.  Tricia Trotter handed out a team high seven assists.

The loss drops the Vikings to 11-14 on the season and 3-12 in conference play.  Concordia improves to 16-11 and 8-7 in conference.  Dana will travel to Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.  Tip off is scheduled for 2:00pm.  The last home game will be on Valentines Day, February 14, with tip off at 7:30pm.
