Dana women’s basketball comeback falls short versus
Doane
Crete, Nebraska ~ The Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball
schedule has started for the women’s basketball team and that means
a series of match-ups with nationally rated opponents. Tuesday
night saw the Vikings
travel to Crete to take on the Doane Tigers. Despite a scoring
flurry in the final three minutes, Dana fell short against the number
11 team
in the
NAIA, 90-81.
Dana took the Tigers by the tail as the first half
opened. Felicia Ellis (JR, Rockwell City, Iowa) and Amy Nichol
(JR, Des Moines,
Iowa) each hit three pointers in the opening 90 seconds of the
game. A rash of
Viking
fouls put Dana’s height on the bench and the Tigers on the free
throw line. With Dana in foul trouble, Doane extended its lead
to 13 points. The
Vikings fought back to draw with in 10 as the half ended.
The second
half saw the two teams battle back and forth. Dana clawed to
within three points as Erin Bazata (SO, Randolph, Neb.) knocked
down two free throws. Doane woke up from that point and went
on a 28-7 run to put
the game seemingly out of reach. That was until Heidi Gowery
(FR, St. Helena, Neb.) hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 17 with
2:47 left to go in the
game. Dana found a spark that it had been missing in the game
and took control. Allie Lamb (SO, North English, Iowa) nailed a lay
up with 30 seconds remaining
to cut the lead to eight points. It was a story of too little
too late as the Vikings were unable to beat the clock.
Lamb had a career
high 22 points. She was near perfect from the free throw line hitting
10-of-11 charity shots. Nichol helped
out with 13 points. Gowery added 12 points from the bench.
Lack of rebounding
was
the Achilles
heel for Dana as Doane held a 38-27 advantage. The Tigers also
went to the line nine more times than the Vikings, which was
the margin
of victory.
The loss drops Dana to 0-2 in the GPAC and 4-3 overall.
Dana is off over the Thanksgiving break. They will return to action
next Wednesday at home against Briar Cliff. Tip-off is scheduled
for
7:30
p.m.
