Vikings Split at Grand View Classic
Des Moines, IA ~ The Dana
College Women’s Basketball traveled to Des Moines, IA and Grand View
College over Christmas Break. The Vikings spilt their two games at the
Grand View Classic. Dana lost to host Grand View College on Friday
56-51. They rebounded to defeat William Penn for the second time this
year 64-47.
In the battle of Vikings on Friday, Dana and Grand
View were evenly matched. Dana took a five point lead midway through
the first period on a Tricia Trotter (FR, Treynor, IA) jumper.
Grand View whittled the Dana lead down in the ensuing minutes. Grand
View then took an 11 point lead with five minutes left. Coach Brenda
Mechels called a time out to stop the Grand View run. Amy Nichol
(JR, Des Moines) hit two free throws in the closing minute of the first
half to draw Dana within one. Amanda Bryant (SO, Treynor, IA)
then hit one of two free throws to draw the game even heading into
halftime.
Neither team could pull away in the second half and
exchanged several leads. A Dana cold spell allowed Grand View to jump
out in front by six with three minutes remaining. Erin Bazata
(SO, Randolph, NE) hit a three pointer to cut the lead in half, but Dana
could not draw any closer.
The Vikings had three players scoring in double
digits. Tricia Trotter led Dana with 14 points. Amy Nichol
impressed the home crowd with 12 and Erin Bazata scored a
career high 10 points. Bazata, Trotter, and Amanda Bryant all
pulled down a team high six rebounds in the loss. Jen Endres
(JR, Lincoln, NE) dished out five assists.
On Saturday night, Dana squared off against William
Penn. This was a rematch of a November 7th game in which
Jennifer Endres hit a jumper in the final three seconds to give Dana the
win. Saturdays match-up would not be as dramatic.
It looked as if the Lady Statemen would run away
and hide from the Vikings. Dana shot a miserable 23 percent from the
field in the opening half. The Vikings raced out to an 11-6 lead in the
opening ten minutes, but the shots stopped falling. Dana missed on
three shots and turned the ball over six times in a four minute span.
The six point lead soon became a six point deficit. William Penn
stretched the lead to as many as nine before the end of the half.
The Lady Statesmen increased their lead to ten
points in the second half, before Coach Mechels’ bunch could gather
themselves. Dana then asserted themselves on the boards. Amanda
Bryant, Tricia Trotter, Heidi Gowery (FR, McCook, NE), and Jen
Endres collectively pulled down 13 rebounds in the second half. The
improved rebounding gave Dana easy second and third looks at the
basket. This would allow Dana to overcome the William Penn lead and
allow them to go up by 17. The Lady Statesmen could not match-up
against the Vikings aggressive rebounding. Dana came away with a 64-47
victory.
Dana was led offensively by Heidi Gowery
with 13 points. Tricia Trotter and Amanda Bryant each
scored 12 points. Amy Nichol added 11. Trotter and Jen Endres
each had seven rebounds on the evening. Tricia Trotter was named
to the Grand View Classic all-tournament team with her efforts.
Dana is currently 7-7 on the season, but only 1-5
in conference play. The Vikings look to improve their conference
standings this week with two home games. Dana will take on the surprise
Midland Lutheran Warriors on Wednesday night. The reserve game will be
played at 5:30pm and the varsity will follow at 7:30pm. Then Dana will
face Dakota Wesleyan on Friday at 4:00pm.
