Vikings Earn Road Victory
Fremont, Nebraska ~
Looking to stop a conference and road losing streak, the
women’s basketball team traveled to Fremont, Nebraska on Saturday
afternoon. The Vikings came away from the new Midland Event Center with
a 60-57 victory.
The first half saw both teams
exchange baskets, but neither team could take a large lead. Midland
held a slim lead through the majority of the first half. The Vikings
took their first lead of the game with seven minutes remaining in the
half. Allie Lamb (SO, North English, IA) hit a jumper in the
paint to put Dana up one. The lead was short lived as Midland
capitalized on a Dana turnover to retake the lead. The two teams went
back to exchanging leads for the remainder of the half.
The second half saw the Vikings come
out with intensity. Dana grabbed their second lead of the game when
Amanda Bryant (SO, Treynor, IA) hit a jumper on a fast break. The
Vikings extended their lead to nine when Bryant hit another jumper in
the lane. Midland was not ready to quit on their home floor and came
roaring back. The Warriors retook the lead with eleven minutes left to
go in the game. Midland eventually took a three point lead, but Dana
came storming back. Heidi Gowery (FR, St. Helena, NE) knocked
down a jumper to give Dana back the lead. Dana fought off every Midland
comeback attempt. Tricia Trotter (FR, Treynor, IA) then hit a
shot to put Dana up one with less than two minutes remaining. Then
Gowery sank one of two free throws to put Dana up two with 44 seconds
remaining. Amanda Bryant then gave Dana a three point lead with a free
throw with 12 seconds let. Bryant then sealed the win as she blocked a
Midland three point shot with three seconds remaining.
Dana had four players in double
digit scoring. Amanda Bryant led all Vikings with 14 points and
seven rebounds. Tricia Trotter had 13 points and dished out a
team high five assists. Amy Nichol (JR, Des Moines, IA) and
Heidi Gowery each had ten points. Nichol and Gowery each had three
steals for the Vikings. Allie Lamb added four points and a game
high nine rebounds.
The Vikings improve to 10-12 overall
and 3-10 in conference play. Midland drops to 14-9 overall and 4-8 in
the GPAC. Dana hosts the College of St. Mary on Tuesday evening at
6:00pm. The Flames are currently 8-14 on the year
