Bryant, Nichol lead Vikings
Blair, NE ~
The Viking women’s basketball team gave #6 ranked
Morningside all they could handle Saturday afternoon, but fell 69-59.
Dana College had the lead early on
as Amanda Bryant (SO, Treynor, IA) hit a lay-up in the lane. A
series of missed shots hurt the Vikings as the Morningside took over.
The Mustangs stretched their lead to nine points as the halftime buzzer
sounded. Dana shot 45-percent for the half and out rebounded
Morningside 15-10. What hurt was the 13 turn-overs committed by Dana in
the half.
Morningside came out of the
half-time break and extended their lead to 17 points. Allie Lamb
(SO, North English, IA) ended the Mustang run as she hit a lay-up in the
paint. The Vikings slowly cut into the Morningside lead as Amy
Nichol (JR, Des Moines, IA) was fouled as she sank a 15 foot
jumper. Nichol then completed the three point play as she hit the free
throw. Morningside stretched their lead back out to 13 point with nine
minutes left to go in the game. The Vikings again stormed back cutting
the lead to six with four and a half minutes to go. Nichol again was
the Viking go-to player as she scored on a lay-up. The Vikings could
get no closer as the buzzer sounded.
Dana had two players in double digit
scoring. Amanda Bryant led all scorers with 20 points. Bryant
was a perfect seven of seven from the field. Amy Nichol added 19
more points. Tricia Trotter (FR, Treynor, IA) had a team high
eight rebounds. Allie Lamb chipped in five points and pulled
down seven rebounds.
The Vikings will travel to Sioux
City, IA on Wednesday night to take on Briar Cliff at 6:00pm. Dana lost
to Briar Cliff by one in overtime early in the season. The Vikings
return home on January 30 as they host the College of St. Mary at
6:00pm.
