Trotter Leads Vikings over Waldorf

January 15, 2007

Forest City, IA ~ Weather would not stop Dana College women’s Basketball team from taking on Waldorf College on Sunday afternoon.  The Vikings shut down the high powered Waldorf squad 64-58.

Early on it looked like Dana had trouble shaking off the nearly five hour drive to Forest City.  The Warriors raced out to an early 7-2 lead in the opening two minutes.  The Vikings gathered their game legs and quickly fought back.    Tricia Trotter (FR, Treynor, IA) nailed a three-pointer to draw Dana within two points.  Following an Amanda Bryant (SO, Treynor, IA) defensive rebound, Erin Bazata (SO, Randolph, NE) nailed Dana’s second consecutive three-pointer to put Dana up one.  The two teams exchanged leads until Bazata hit the back end of two free throws with 13 minutes remaining in the half.  Dana would not look back from there.  The Vikings would stretch their lead to as many as 13 points when Heidi Gowery (FR, St. Helena, NE) was fouled in the act of shooting.  The shot was good and Gowery sank the bonus free throw.  Dana would go into the half time locker room up ten.

The second half saw Dana maintain control.  Waldorf never really threatened to regain the lead.  The Vikings kept a double digit lead throughout the majority of the half.  Amanda Bryant gave Dana its largest lead of the afternoon at 13 when she hit a jumper in the paint with 7:30 remaining.  Waldorf would use a late surge to get within six points in the closing minutes, but Tricia Trotter would nail two free throws in the final second to keep Dana up by six.

Tricia Trotter was one of three Vikings in double digits with a game high 17 points.  Trotter also dished out four assists and pulled down six rebounds.  Amanda Bryant scored 11, while Erin Bazata added ten.  Heidi Gowery, in her first college start, pulled down a team high seven rebounds.

Dana evened out its record at 9-9 on the season.  Waldorf dropped to 13-7 overall.  Dana will travel to #15 Hastings College on Wednesday evening.  Tip-off is slated for 6:00pm.  The Vikings conference schedule does not get any easier after that as they host #7 Morningside College in Blair on January 20.
