Vikings Fall in Conference
Play
Last Friday the Dana women’s basketball team earned its first Great
Plains Athletic Conference win of the season over Sioux Falls,
70-66. On Wednesday night, the Vikings shot over 50 percent from the
field and had four starters in double digits. Unfortunately, the
Chargers shot better then the Vikings and came away with an 80-65
win.
Briar Cliff came into the game ranked sixth in the conference with
an overall conference record of 3-3. Dana was able to keep it close
throughout much of the first half, trailing by only four. Dana went
cold late in the half, which allowed Briar Cliff to extend its lead
to 42-33 going into half.
Coming out of half, the Vikings turned up their defensive pressure.
Dana forced two turnovers and four missed shots to cut the lead to
three points. Briar Cliff responded by pulling ahead by five before
another Dana rally. Kalen Carlson (SO, Omaha, Neb.) nailed
two free throws and Amanda Bryant (JR, Treynor, Iowa) made a
lay up to bring Dana within two points. This was close was the
Vikings would get. The Chargers used three three-pointers to pull
ahead by 14. Dana could not mount an answer to the three-point
barrage.
The Vikings had four players in double digits. Sophomore Tricia
Trotter (Treynor, Iowa) led the way with 13 points. Amy
Nichol (SR, Des Moines, Iowa) continued her steady play with 12
points and six rebounds. Erin Bazata (JR, Randolph, Neb.)
had 11 points and five boards. Bryant chipped in ten points
and four rebounds.
Dana falls to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the GPAC. The Vikings travel
out of conference on Saturday as they square off against the College
of St. Mary in Omaha at 2 p.m.
