Dana Women Come Up Short
The Dana women’s basketball team came up short against Great Plains
Athletic Conference opponent Doane College last Wednesday. After
going into halftime with a one-point lead, the Dana Women fell,
65-62.
The Vikings were hot from behind the arc in the first half, making
four of seven (57%). Megan Gerdes (SO, Treynor, Iowa) hit a
big three pointer in the last five minutes to give the Vikings a
seven-point lead. Following two Megan Finn (FR, Omaha, Neb.)
free throws, the Vikings went up by nine with only three minutes
remaining in the half. Doane turned up the defensive intensity in
the final three minutes and went on a 13-5 run. The Vikings went
into the locker room at half with a 27-26 lead.
Momentum in the second half switched to the Tigers. Doane outscored
Dana 39-35 in the final period. The Tigers did most of their damage
from the free throw line. Dana saw Doane stretch its lead to nine
points midway through the second half.
Erin Bazata (JR, Randolph, Neb.) connected on two lay-ups
following Tiger turnovers to pull the Vikings back even with five
minutes remaining. Dana’s could not overcome a lack of free throws.
Doane was 17 of 20 from the charity stripe while Dana only made
seven trips to the free throw line in the second half.
Gerdes led all Vikings with 15 points. She was a perfect
five of five from three-point land. Amanda Bryant (JR,
Treynor, Iowa) was the only other Viking in double digits with 12
points and seven rebounds. Bazata had eight points and nine
rebounds. Amy Nichol (SR, Des Moines, Iowa) had a
game-high six steals to go along with five rebounds and seven
points.
The Vikings fall to 6-14 overall and 1-7 in GPAC play.
