Vikings Fall to Warriors in Women’s Basketball

The first game of the Great Plains Athletic Conference season for the Viking women’s basketball team was against Dana’s biggest rival, Midland Lutheran.  Rivalry week did not get off on a good foot for the Vikings as they fell at home, 82-72.

Dana held the lead early on with a pair of free throws from Tricia Trotter (SO, Treynor, Iowa).  Following a Midland basket, Amy Nichol (SR, Des Moines, Iowa) put the Vikings back on top, 4-2.  Amanda Bryant (JR, Treynor, Iowa) gave Dana its biggest lead of the night as she hit a ten-foot jumper.  Things went downhill from there for the Vikings.

Midland went on a 17-7 run to take a seven-point lead midway through the first half.  Dana fought back and tied the game on a pair of Trotter free throws.  The Warriors took a 31-28 lead into the half.

Dana came out of the locker room cold.  The Vikings turned the ball over four times in the opening three minutes and found themselves down 11 before Nichol scored the first Viking basket of the second half.

Turnovers and fouls haunted the Vikings in the second half.  Dana could do nothing more than watch as Midland stretched its lead to 14 points with 5:27 left in the game.  Nichol scored seven points as the Vikings cut the lead to six, but Dana could not get closer.  Midland came away with an 82-72 win.

Nichol had a game-high 21 points and ten rebounds. Trotter added 16 points.  Jillian Bryant (SO, McCook, Neb.) added 11 points off the bench and pulled down six rebounds.

The two teams were even in almost every category, except fouls and free throws.  Midland was called for 19 team fouls and went to the free throw line 41 times.  Dana only made 23 trips to the charity stripe and had 33 fouls called on them.

Dana is now 4-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.  Midland improves to 6-3 and 1-0 in conference.  Dana travels to Lincoln on Tuesday to square off against Nebraska Wesleyan University (1-4, 0-1).  Tip off is slated for 6 p.m.  KDCV is planning on airing both the men’s and women’s games Tuesday night.  The Vikings will return home on Dec. 5 to take on nationally-rated Hastings College.
