Vikings Flat Against Lancers

Coming off a thrilling last second win on Tuesday night, the Viking basketball team could not muster much against Mt. Marty.  Dana shot only 37-percent for the game and fell 77-54.

Dana found itself on the defensive from the start of the game.  The Lancers raced out to a 12-4 lead early in the game.  Amy Nichol (SR, Des Moines, IA) scored two consecutive baskets to pull the Vikings within four at the midway point of the first half.  This was as close as the Vikings would get in the first half.  Dana could not find its shooting touch and went into the locker-room down 37-26.

Chelsey Williams (JR, Tabor, IA) brought the lead to nine in the opening seconds of the second half with a 15-foot jumper.  Unfortunately for the Vikings, four missed shots and three turnovers gave Mt. Marty much needed momentum.  The Lancers turned the Vikings mistakes into a 48-30 lead with 14:13 left in the game.  Coach Brenda Mechels used a timeout to try and settle down her team, but Dana saw Mt. Marty increase the lead to 22 points.  Kayla Hofstetter (SO, Lawrence, NE) brought the score closer with a made lay-up and a free throw.  The Vikings were unable to draw closer as the clock ticked down and found them on the wrong end of a 77-54 score.

Amanda Bryant (JR, Treynor, IA) was the lone Viking in double digits with 12 points.  Kayla Hofstetter had nine points and was seven of nine from the free throw line.  Amy Nichol had eight points, five rebounds, and three assists.  Erin Bazata (JR, Randolph, NE) had a game high nine rebounds in the Viking loss.

Dana falls to 8-17 on the year and 3-10 in GPAC action.  Things will not get any easier for the Vikings as they host #23 Doane College (15-9, 8-4) on Tuesday evening.  The Varsity game will start at 7:30pm.
