Vikings
Fall to Red Raiders
The Dana College women's basketball team was looking to upset the
Northwestern Red Raiders who came to town Saturday ranked No. 2 in the
NAIA. After opening the game on a 7-0 run, the Vikings failed to
capitalize on their quick start and fell 85-57.
The Vikings had the task of slowing down one of the NAIA's premier
scorers on Saturday. Debbie Remmerde came into Saturday's showdown with
the Vikings averaging almost 32 points a game. She did not fail to
impress as she outscored the entire Dana team 23-22 in the first half. Chelsey
Williams (JR, Tabor, Iowa) kept the Vikings close, scoring 11 points
in the first half. At halftime, Dana trailed, 38-22.
The second half opened up on a positive note with another basket by
Williams, cutting the lead to 14. Northwestern quickly answered with two
more Remmerde jumpers and the Vikings never got any closer, losing by a
final score of 85-57.
Williams scored a career-high 15 points for the Vikings. Amy Nichol
(SR, Des Moines, Iowa) had eight points and four steals. Tricia
Trotter (SO, Treynor, Iowa) also contributed eight points in the
loss. Erin Bazata (JR, Randolph, Neb.) and Megan Finn (FR,
Omaha, Neb.) each chipped in six points.
Dana shot 31 percent from the field for the game, while Northwestern
shot a staggering 60 percent. The Vikings forced 27 turnovers on the
game, tallying 14 steals. Dana is now 7-16 on the season with a Great
Plains Athletic Conference record of 2-9.
Next up for the Vikings is a Wednesday night match-up with Nebraska
Wesleyan (5-12 overall, 2-8 GPAC). Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
