Women’s
Basketball Ends Streak, Nip Sioux Falls
Home cooking is just what the
doctor ordered for the Dana College women’s basketball team. The Vikings
were on a nine-game skid, including the past three on the road against
ranked teams. Dana came away with a 70-66 win over the University of
Sioux Falls on Saturday.
Dana raced out to a 16-6 lead. The Vikings used team basketball to
build their lead. Six different Vikings scored the first 16 points of
the game. Megan Finn (FR, Omaha, Neb.) capped off the opening
run by draining a three-pointer. The Cougars were unable to claw their
way back into the game in the first half. Erin Bazata (JR,
Randolph, Neb.) hit a lay-up in the paint as the half expired to give
Dana a 33-22 lead.
Dana extended its lead to 12 points early in the second half on a Finn
three-pointer. The Cougars got hot from the floor midway through the
second half. USF took the lead with 12:00 left in the game. Dana did
not let the game get away from them and regrouped in the final five
minutes. Megan Parker (JR, Sloan, Iowa) hit two crucial jumpers
to build the Viking lead back to five points. Tricia Trotter (SO,
Treynor, Iowa) put the game out of reach by hitting three of four free
throws to end the game.
Dana had four players in double digit scoring. Amanda Bryant
(JR, Treynor, Iowa) and Trotter each scored 13 points. Trotter also
dished out five assists. Parker added 12 points in 13 minutes of play.
Finn chipped in 11 points and three rebounds. Bazata had a
game-high nine rebounds.
The Vikings are now 5-12 on the year and 1-5 in Great Plains Athletic
Conference play. Dana travels to Sioux City, Iowa, on Wednesday to take
on the Chargers from Briar Cliff at 6 p.m. The Chargers are 9-9 overall
and 3-3 in GPAC play.
